Country:
The Executive Chairman of Dominion University, Professor Felix Nikoi Hammond, has called for an overhaul of university education in Ghana.
He underscored the need for those in charge of the sector to adopt a new approach that will help solve the country`s socioeconomic challenges. He said Ghana’s current university education does not encourage self-employment or individual innovations, and that most of the courses are centred on white-colour jobs and not entrepreneurship.
This, he noted, was the reason for the high unemployment rate among university graduates in the country. Prof Hammond made the call at the launch of the TEASE Evolution, an initiative by the University to academically empower its students to be problem solvers during and after completion of school, held last Friday, May 10, 2024, in Accra.

Essential role of statistics in university education

Nigeria
Country:
Statistics, often seen as just another branch of mathematics, holds a far more pivotal role in education and should be considered a mandatory course across all university disciplines.
This assertion stems not only from the practical application of statistics but also from my personal academic journey, which underscored the importance of understanding real-world applications of mathematical concepts
The utility of statistics extends beyond individual sectors like automobile design. It is foundational in fields as diverse as sports, politics, medicine, engineering, and business. Statistics helps us analyse sports performances, understand factors associated with diseases, and adapt businesses to meet customer needs.

Revitalising Nigeria’s education system: Addressing brain drain and embracing technology
Tags:

Nigeria
Country:
NIGERIA’s education system is at a crossroads, grappling with a brain drain that has seen many of its brightest minds seek opportunities abroad. This exodus of talent is a pressing concern, as it not only deprives the country of its future but somehow will undermine economic and social progress.
As a technology enthusiast in teaching and learning, I believe it is essential to explore the reasons behind this trend while recommending viable solutions that could revitalize our educational system.
One of the primary reasons for which brain drain has persisted is traceable to the desire for a better life; a mission that has made millions of Nigerians scattered around the world in a bid to scale income, acquire quality education, or provide a fresh start for their families in a world-class facilitated and cutting-edge technology society.

Academic literacy is more than language, it’s about critical thinking and analysis: universities should do more to teach these skills

South Africa
Country:
Making the adjustment from school to university is no easy task. For instance, there’s a big difference between writing a high school essay and crafting an academic paper which meets university standards.
In the decades since formal apartheid ended, South Africa’s universities have become increasingly accessible to students from different socioeconomic, schooling and linguistic backgrounds. But many of these students do not have the language or literacy skills to succeed at university level.
When I talk about “language”, I don’t mean that their level of fluency in English is the problem. In my long experience as a researcher and practitioner in the field of academic literacy, I have seen time and again that not only non-native English speakers struggle to transition from school to university. Many students, no matter what language they speak, lack the skills of critical thinking, analysis and logical reasoning.
