Nine out of 10 kids are not developmentally on track in literacy and numeracy – study of 8 African countries

Country:
Children develop an enormous amount during their early years – socially, physically, emotionally and cognitively. What happens between the ages of 0 and 8 years can predict important long-term outcomes: for example, how a child will fare at school; what their health will be like and their future earning potential.
Children in sub-Saharan Africa have the highest risk globally of experiencing delays in their development. There are several reasons for this, among them a lack of stimulation. Too many parents and caregivers are not reading to, playing with or encouraging their young children to learn, or providing learning aids such as books and toys.
This may explain why the region has the lowest proportion of children who are developmentally on track when it comes to literacy and numeracy.

Nigerian students should make use of technological educational opportunities, founder and director of Open Institute of Technology (OPIT), EU-accredited online institution, Riccardo Ocleppo, has said.
He said the institution, renowned for its expertise in IT education, plans to increase enrolment from Africa.
He said: “In an era of inevitable acceleration towards transitions impacting society in the digital age, OPIT’s mission is to focus on quality online education in technology.
“The starting point is the awareness of the misalignment in the labour market, between what is taught in most universities and what companies are looking for. That mismatch, accelerated by advent of AI, is generated by too much theory and too little practical approach. We have identified skills to guide this change and translated them into our innovative degrees.”

Closing the Gender Gap in STEM Education in Africa
Tags:
Education, Girl Child
Africa
Country:
Increasingly in Africa, many young girls and women show great interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education as evidenced by the eminent and young female scientists celebrated across the continent. Yet, the under-representation of women in STEM fields persists, globally and across the continent.
Why are women under-represented in STEM education?
This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors such as the entrenched cultural perception that STEM is a male domain and that boys and men are just 'better' at math and science, limited early intervention to get girls and young women excited about STEM, domestic pressures on girls, early marriage and child pregnancy, and lack of STEM female role models.
