Nigeria

Country:

The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has faulted the N3.52 trillion allocated to the education sector in the 2025 budget presented by President Bola Tinubu, saying that the amount falls far short of expecations.

Gbajabiamila, who acknowledged that education is a right and not a privilege of all Nigerians, said that the federal and state governments could not fund qualitative public university education if the system continues to run in its present form.

He said that when compared to other countries of the world, the current budgetary allocation for the education sector in Nigeria falls far below what the nation needs to guarantee a quality education. He disclosed that there are many bills seeking to establish new universities in the National Assembly as “every legislator is desirous of having a university in his constituency.”

Role of AI in transforming Nigeria’s education sector

Tags:

Technology, Opinions

Nigeria

Country:

The increasing advent of technology is slowly, but evidently taking over major sectors in the world today, but not so much in Nigeria. Education is the backbone of any country, especially if it is one that hopes for the better future of its youths and the growth of the country at large.

Despite the known fact that education is key to national development, Nigeria’s education sector seems to be buckling under pressure ranging from a limited access to quality learning resources, poor school infrastructure, and overcrowded classrooms, among others.

It doesn’t end there as many educators lack the digital literacy to properly use these tools. Proper strategies, digital literacy training and a focus on providing proper infrastructure in schools are the barriers that need to be tackled to surmount this challenge. Addressing these issues first would pave way for AI integration in schools.

Nigeria

Country:

The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has urged Nigerian universities to expand their international reach by attracting foreign students as a strategic move to diversify revenue sources and ease pressure on government funding.

He spoke on Tuesday at the maiden annual lecture of Osun State University in Osogbo, with the theme: “Interrogating the Funding of Education: Global versus Nigerian Perspectives. Gbajabiamila, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, said universities worldwide rely on fees from international students to subsidise domestic education, a model Nigeria must now emulate.

“There are over 130 public universities nationwide, and almost two million young people seek admission every year. The truth is that neither the federal government nor the states can afford to sustain this number without establishing alternative revenue streams for the institutions.”
