Microlearning and upskilling: Can Africa leapfrog traditional education?

Tags:

Nigeria

Country:

There’s an old African proverb that says, “He who learns, teaches.” But what happens when the traditional means of learning are either too slow, too expensive, or too out of touch with the demands of a modern, digital economy? In a continent as young, vibrant, and fast-moving as Africa, the urgency for education that is practical, rapid, and scalable has never been more critical. Enter: microlearning and digital upskilling.

Africa is home to the world’s youngest population, with over 60 percent under the age of 25. And yet, many of its formal education systems remain entrenched in legacy models: rigid curricula, under-resourced institutions, and long lead times between learning and economic participation. For a generation that consumes information in 30-second clips, this system feels increasingly misaligned with the pace and priorities of their lives

Microlearning is the antithesis of traditional education. Think bite-sized lessons, focused learning objectives, and on-demand delivery. It’s learning that’s mobile-friendly, self-paced, and highly contextual. Whether it’s a five-minute tutorial on SQL or a short video on emotional intelligence, microlearning enables individuals to gain new skills without stepping into a classroom or leaving their jobs.

Edo govt to recruit more teachers into public schools

Nigeria

Country:

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has promised to improve learning facilities, recruit more qualified teachers, provide good infrastructure, a conducive learning atmosphere and secure school environments across the State.

He made the pledges while inspecting ongoing renovation of some schools in Edo Central Senatorial District, which were hitherto in very bad shapes when he visited the facilities in January, 2025. The governor, who since the assumption of office, had taken bold steps by embarking on people-oriented programmes and policies had earlier declared a state of emergency in the education sector.

He said he would be working to change the narrative in the education sector. The infrastructural development of the Okpebholo-led administration has already transformed many public schools. Many of the schools abandoned by Godwin Obaseki-led administration now have new structures, including good classrooms and perimeter fences to ensure the safety of school children.

Suba South MP Caroli Omondi is expected to appear before the National Assembly Education Committee to shed light on his draft legislation to provide for the development of a curriculum and teaching of 'Nationhood Science' at all levels of learning.

Speaking on Citizen TV, the first-term MP explained that his push to amend the Basic Education Act stems from concerns over the current state of leadership in the country. "Countries such as Singapore and Sweden which have that kind of education, you find they are very orderly. The citizens and the leadership understand what their role are, he said."

"Today in Kenya, every person want to be a politician, Kenyan leaders have become careerists, they are people who this is the pathway to some social status, to many it is not about service. A lot of politicians when you talk to them they will tell you about something they call self interest and they will quote to you Machiavelli, political ideology of the 15th Century," Caroli explained.

Experts at the Seventh African Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Forum, (ARSTIF), held in Kampala, Uganda, on 7-8 April, examined ways to accelerate Africa’s attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through strategic teaching and the use of science, technology and innovation, also emphasising the role of STI in driving economic growth, improving well-being, mitigating the effects of climate change, and safeguarding the environment in Africa.

The forum’s theme was, ‘Driving job creation and economic growth through sustainable and inclusive science, technology and innovation solutions to meet the 2030 Agenda [for Sustainable Development] and Agenda 2063 [The Africa We Want]’.

Tags:

Ethiopia

Country:

The Ministry of Education recently issued a report to the HPR regarding the sector’s performance over the last six months. One of the areas of focus was quality education. The author intended to highlight issues of quality education in Ethiopia and what needs to be done to improve it.

For over a century, the issue of education has been on the horizon in Ethiopia. Every government that has ruled this country has its area of focus on education. However, over the last fifty years of modern education in this country, several strategies, policies and roadmaps have been designed to make education the centre of life and work in Ethiopia.

For more than 30 years, the focus in education was theoretically on quality but in fact, governments in this country focused on quantity rather than quality education showing a greater difference between rhetoric between what is on the ground in reality.
