Panic as U.S. cancels visas for Nigerian, other international students

Country:
Hundreds of international students across the United States, U.S are facing sudden visa cancellations and legal status terminations, sparking panic and confusion on college campuses nationwide. “We thought it was unusual at first,” said Boston-based attorney Matthew Maiona. “Now it’s coming fast and furious.”
Many of the students are from India and China, but lawyers say no region appears to be exempt. Some students were reportedly targeted over minor infractions like traffic violations. Four students in Michigan are suing the government, claiming they were given no clear reason for their status termination.
Others across the country are filing similar lawsuits, and judges in states like New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Montana have temporarily restored some students’ legal status. In a shift from past procedures, universities are now discovering terminations directly in the government’s immigration database, often before students are even notified.

Country:
THREE University of Zimbabwe (UZ) lecturers have been arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) after staging a protest at the institution over poor remuneration. Wednesday morning, UZ lecturers went on strike over low wages, which they argue have lost purchasing power amid the country's deteriorating economic climate.
While picketing at the university, police arrested leaders of the Association of University Teachers (AUT). AUT president Philemon Chamburuka told NewZimbabwe.com that they were angered by the arrests of their members.
"The status quo is that the strike is ongoing. As of now, we are encouraging our members not to report for duty. We are not intimidated. We are infuriated by the arrests of our colleagues," said Chamburuka. UZ lecturers are discontent with their monthly wages of US$250 and ZiG 6,000. Their plight is further worsened by a lack of working tools, forcing them to use their own equipment to carry out their duties.

How to get higher education data to deliver on its promises
Tags:

Global
Country:
Digital data is perceived to be valuable in contemporary economies and societies. In higher education, stakeholders believe that collecting, analysing, structuring, managing and using data and data outputs – such as analytics, dashboards or scores – will improve the sector.
Universities aim to make data useful and strive to become data-driven organisations in their strategic and operational activities. Educational technology (edtech) companies strive to monetise the digital data they collect, ie, make data economically valuable. Policy-makers seek to base their decisions on real-time data. However, there are many misconceptions and challenges in realising the data value imaginary in higher education.
There appears to be a consistent and omnipresent belief in data value across universities, edtech companies and investors in edtech. However, this value is not really realised, at least not to the extent wished by stakeholders. Data value means different things to different stakeholders.

Amid rift with France, Algeria drops French at universities

Algeria
Country:
Amid an ongoing diplomatic crisis with France, Algeria is pressing ahead to teach medicine in the English language at universities, as a part of a process of moving away from the long-entrenched use of the French language, writes Basma El Atti for The New Arab.
On 2 April, Algeria’s Ministry of Higher Education issued a directive instructing all public universities to begin transitioning first-year medical and scientific courses entirely to English, starting from the next academic year.
The move is part of a broader strategy to introduce English as the primary language of instruction across the country’s educational institutions – a shift framed as both a step towards modernisation and a ‘quiet divorce’ from French. This shift is not entirely new, nor is it simply a pedagogical change.

Country:
Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary general, UN Tourism, has called on the need for strategic investment in education to strengthen Africa’s tourism workforce. The secretary general of the UN’s special agency made the call in his keynote address at the opening of the 3rd Travel, Hospitality & Tourism Education Summit in Lusaka, Zambia on April 7, 2025.
The keynote address further underscored the urgent need for structured, relevant, and inclusive education systems to support Africa’s growing tourism industry. Citing 2023 data, Pololikashvili highlighted that travel and tourism accounted for just 4.9 percent of employment across Africa—a figure he said could grow significantly through targeted educational reforms and strategic skills development.
“Africa is the youngest continent, with 60 percent of its population under the age of 25,” he noted. “These young people represent immense potential and not just for tourism, but for the socio-economic transformation of their communities. But to unlock that potential, we must invest in education pathways that lead to real, sustainable opportunities.”

Nigeria’s race for inclusive education leaves millions of nomadic children behind (II)
Tags:

Nigeria
Country:
The hyperactive life of nomadism is disruptive to basic education, making nomadic children unable to fit into conventional schools. TheCable visited nomadic settlements in Nigeria’s northern city of Kaduna and other small communities to document how inadequate access to education marginalises already disconnected nomads and potentially fuels crime.
In addition to the northern region, many nomadic communities down south lack functional schools. School-age children idle around their huts all day. Where nomadic schools exist in the Iseyin town of Oyo state, just 62 miles north of Ibadan, the state capital, they lack critical infrastructure and sanitation, making them unfit to be called a place of learning for the young ones.
There, a single dilapidated building struggles to hold its purpose. Its corrugated roof dulls under the sun, offering meagre shelter from the elements. Flies buzz relentlessly as bees would in an almost deafening hum of discomfort. The pupils swat them off their faces, barely distracted from the lessons happening inside.
