Kucheza Gaming, in collaboration with Ukie Digital Schoolhouse and Nintendo UK, has successfully hosted its latest Teachers’ Ingenuity Day, a pioneering training program aimed at introducing Lagos State public school educators to game-based learning techniques.

The initiative equipped 36 teachers from 24 schools in District IV with innovative teaching methods for computing education. With limited access to computing education and digital devices in many schools, the training focused on the Playful Computing Curriculum, an award-winning, unplugged program that fosters computational thinking without requiring immediate computer access.

This hands-on, interactive approach enables teachers to make STEM education more engaging and inclusive, regardless of technological limitations. “By integrating game-based learning and digital literacy into their teaching, we are equipping them with essential skills to prepare students for a technology-driven world.

Reforming education in Africa for economic development

Tags:

Education, Opinions

Nigeria

Country:

In August 2024, the International Labour Organisation reported that the unemployment rate among youth in Sub-Saharan Africa stood at 8.9 per cent. This huge percentage shows that many young Africans cannot get decent jobs, which deepens poverty, promotes inequality, and ultimately reduces the region’s chances of achieving greater economic freedom.

To combat youth unemployment, governmental agencies, education experts, academics, and employers of labour must collaborate to reform tertiary education curricula to meet current and future needs. Private companies should work with public higher institutions to create internships and job opportunities.

These job opportunities will enable unemployed, qualified young Africans to gain requisite exposure and work experience. Also, this public-private partnership should strategically invest in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to equip young people with the skills required to drive the region forward.

Africa must invest in education, skills development to enable workforce dominate economies by 2050 —PMI boss

Country:

The Managing Director, Project Management Institute (PMI), Sub-Saharan Africa, George Asamani, has called for a massive investment in education, skills development and strategic workforce planning for the continent’s youthful workforce to dominate economies, by 2050.

The PMI boss noted that one of the areas where the continent has an edge over other continents remains its youthful population, which could be one of its most powerful economic assets to bridge labour gaps in aging economies.

He believed one of the ways such advantages can be maximised is for the continent to urgently invest in education, skills development, and strategic workforce planning to ensure its talents are valued, globally.
Without some coordinated efforts, he warned, the continent risks missing out on a defining era that will determine whether its young workforce thrives or remains underutilised in a world desperately in need of its talents.

The President of the Monrovia Consolidated School System Teachers Association (MCSSTA), Augustine N. Nyormui, has announced an indefinite go-slow action until the government adequately addresses their concerns.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the Monrovia Demonstration School, Nyormui said teachers have been left with no choice but to take drastic action after numerous negotiations with the government failed to yield results.

He lamented that past administrations were more responsive to their concerns, unlike the current government, which, according to him, has continuously ignored their plight. "Former Finance Minister and Development Planning officials, as well as the former Director-General of the Civil Service Agency, used to respond to our communications. But this current government and its officials have refused to engage us. This is sad and unfortunate for a government that claims to prioritize education," Nyormui blasted.

Teacher training allowance: A policy reassessment

Tags:

Ghana

Country:

Ghana's educational landscape has undergone significant transformations since its independence, with teacher training playing a pivotal role in shaping the quality of education. Initially, teacher training in Ghana was closely linked to secondary schools, with training colleges often sharing the same compound.

However, as Ghana embarked on a rapid expansion in education in the 1960s, the demand for qualified teachers surged. This necessitated a significant increase in the number of trained teachers, prompting the government to implement various interventions to boost enrolment in teacher training programmes and birth the teacher trainee allowance.

In recent times, the allowance has become a political battleground for the two main political parties, a tug of war between genuine support for trainees, the necessity and relevance of the allowance, and the tempting attraction of electoral gain.

Country:

A non-governmental organisation, School Anti-Bullying Force, has trained over 250 counsellors across Lagos State’s six educational districts on tackling bullying in schools. At the training held at the University of Lagos, the founder of the NGO, Mrs Mariecollete Kekong, said the aim was to not only eradicate bullying in schools but to also create a safe place where children could learn unhindered.

“The programme is to add to the knowledge these counsellors have. It is to teach them to help children identify bullying, eradicate it, prevent it and stand up against it,” she said. Kekong, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, said that the NGO was also setting up anti-bullying centres and School Anti-Bullying Force Clubs in schools across the state.

She said the idea of the club was that even children who are bullies could become anti-bullying heroes. “When children are in a house, if they observe that their mum is either hitting their dad or shouting at their dad, they pick up all these behaviours.

Nigeria

Country:

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for overhauling of outdated curricula in Nigerian Universities. The lawmaker emphasized that Nigerian Universities must rise up to its challenges and prioritise the introduction of tech skills such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, and data analysis.

Kalu, while delivering his convocation lecture to mark the 37th convocation and 50th anniversary of the University Of Calabar on Thursday, revealed that with the use of Artificial Intelligence, most Nigerian courses are becoming obsolete and cannot be linked to problem-solving in line with modern realities.

He said, “The challenge beyond us is clear, our universities must go beyond theory to practical impact, bringing the gown into the town and now into cyberspace where knowledge is applied.” “Universities should stop teaching students courses and curriculums that cannot transform them into problem solvers. There is so much emphasis on CGPA, and it is not based on GPA, it is based on problem-solving.

Mauritius

Country:

As Mauritius positions itself to be a regional knowledge hub in Africa, improving the quality of international higher education and transnational education provision is paramount. But how best to achieve this? For Mauritius, a North-South private-public partnership provided part of the answer.

From 2023-25, a collaboration between Middlesex University and Université des Mascareignes, both in Mauritius, with the University of Potsdam and FH Münster – University of Applied Sciences, both in Germany, empowered university staff to be agents of innovation and make a tangible impact on practice and policy with a particular focus on their institutions’ internal and external quality assurance and enhancement.

The collaboration was the first Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) National Multiplication Training (NMT) for higher education in Mauritius, with the main goal being to support higher education managers in improving the procedures for quality assurance and internationalisation of the curricula in their institutions.
