Teachers advocate Space Science in curriculum

Teachers trained by IHS Towers, a telecoms infrastructure provider, in collaboration with the Limitless Space Institute of the United States, have called for the inclusion of space science in Nigeria’s education curriculum.
Ten secondary school teachers from public schools across Nigeria were selected for training in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics with a specific focus on space technology.

African ancestral studies will reconnect learners to culture, history — Falola

Renowned humanities scholar, Professor Toyin Falola, said African ancestral studies will reconnect individuals with their past, shape future narratives, and foster a deeper appreciation of Africa’s diverse cultures and histories.
Falola in a statement on Monday said that AAS would be inaugurated on October 15 at the University of Ghana, during the 2024 Anton Wilhelm Lecture, organised annually by the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa.
He would announce the various dimensions of African Ancestral Studies in greater detail, focusing on the following areas; Genealogy and Ancestral Lineage, Cultural Practices and Traditions, Governance, Kingship and Political Institutions, Spiritual and Religious Beliefs, Historical Studies, Diaspora and Identity, Language and Oral Traditions, etc.

Revamp education sector to address current challenges, Oyedepo tasks FG

Ezekwesili tasks African ministers on critical investments to improve learning outcomes

Soludo declares free education for senior secondary schools in Anambra

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra, on Thursday, announced free education for students of senior secondary in public schools in the state. Soludo made the announcement in Awka, while meeting with principals and head teachers in public primary and secondary schools.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on Sept. 21, 2023, the governor announced free and compulsory education from nursery to junior secondary in public schools in line with his solution-free education policy.
He noted said that students of senior secondary in public schools would pay N5,000 only as tuition fees.
Against this backdrop, the governor while meeting with principals and head teachers in public schools stated that from next week, the free education policy would be available to students of senior secondary in public schools.

ECOWAS earmarks $380m to electrify schools, health centres in West Africa

The Economic Community of West African States Commission has announced plans to invest $380m in electrifying public schools and health centres across 18 countries, including Nigeria, Benin, Chad, and other nations in West Africa and the Sahel region.
The project aims to address the chronic lack of electricity access, which affects over 208 million people in the region, particularly in rural communities. “The cost of the project is $ 380 million, and we want to promote a new innovative chain to electrify public institutions. Our target is to electrify schools and health centres to improve service delivery.

University of Ghana postpones 2024/2025 academic year amid ongoing staff strikes

The University of Ghana has officially announced the postponement of the start of the 2024/2025 academic year due to ongoing strike actions by several employee groups. The striking groups include the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).
The strike, which began on Monday, September 16, 2024, stems from unresolved issues, such as the failure of the Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD) to implement approved vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances, despite receiving approval from the Ministry of Finance in August 2024.
In a statement released today, the university confirmed that special programs will continue as scheduled. The management also indicated that a new date for the start of the academic year will be announced in due course.

NAFDAC launches campaign against drug abuse in secondary schools

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched an initiative geared towards reducing the prevalence of drug abuse among secondary school students.
Tagged ‘NAFDAC Catch Them Young Programme,’ it focuses on drug abuse education and awareness campaigns on the menace of drug abuse in Nigeria. The agency also launched the NAFDAC consumer safety club.
The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, launched the initiative at the weekend at Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja. She said it is estimated that 14.4 percent or 14.3 million Nigerians are victims of drug abuse.

In line with the theme of the 2024 International Literacy Day: “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace”, both Mrs Esiri and Prof. Anunobi emphasized the importance of children’s effective communication in their indigenous languages in schools, at home, and elsewhere.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has addressed confusion surrounding recent reports of changes to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). In a statement, the ministry clarified that no new reforms to CBC have been announced, as previously claimed in a notice.

FG restates commitment to promote inclusive education

The Federal Government says it is committed to promoting inclusive education in Nigeria, to ensure that the goal of basic education for all is achieved in all its ramifications.
The Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Hamid Bobboyi bared the mind of the federal government during the training worship for 1,878 selected teachers on Inclusive Education Delivery Process for the South -South zone of the century, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.
In his address at the event, which took place simultaneously in three different venues in the state capital including the Conference Hall of Uranus Hotel and Suites, Aka Itiam, Bobboyi said that the commission is pursuing the expansion of access to quality basic education for children of school age, with special attention to children who can easily miss school due to some forms of challenges.
